Woman Seeking Cuddles begins with one of the wildest hooks you’re likely to encounter at the Fringe: Harper unknowingly sleeps with the man who was her sperm donor. It is the kind of revelation that makes you double-take, caught somewhere between a gasp, a laugh and complete disbelief. Wickedly brilliant as a premise, it could easily be the whole show. Instead, writer Renwick McAslan uses it as the starting point for something much more tender, psychologically messy and surprisingly universal.

Played brilliantly by Hannah Strauss, Harper responds to the fallout by throwing herself into sex with anyone up and down America’s Eastern Seaboard and cycling through partners, kinks and increasingly complicated attempts at intimacy. In a world of dating apps, polyamory and endless acronyms, connection begins to feel almost algorithmic. But beneath the comedy is a much darker question: can you really fuck your way to happiness and would you want to?

What makes the show particularly interesting is the way it explores the psychological gap between what Harper consciously understands and what her body cannot forget. The original encounter is barely spoken about, dismissed at first as a crazy moment, yet its impact hangs over everything that follows. Whenever Harper approaches another sexual encounter, she spits against a glass screen, an extraordinary physical manifestation of shame, disgust and self-rejection. Her therapists repeatedly trace her behaviour back to that moment, while Harper herself seems determined to outrun it. 

McAslan handles subjects including kink, polyamory, assault and compulsive sexual behaviour in a way that feels refreshingly interested in the psychology rather than simply the provocation. Harper’s pursuit of sex is funny, reckless and occasionally uncomfortable, but it also becomes an attempt to regain control over her own body and rewrite an experience that has left her feeling fundamentally disconnected from it. Every new encounter promises intimacy, yet what she is really seeking is something much simpler: to feel safe, wanted and held.

There is something wonderfully tender beneath the outrageousness of Woman Seeking Cuddles. McAslan reportedly found the original spark for the play after a date told them how attractive she found a photograph of her sperm-donor father. From that bizarre real-life observation came a story about the strange, sometimes destructive lengths we go to in pursuit of connection. For all its shock value, this is a universal show about about shame, loneliness and the human desire to find someone or something to finally feel held.
