Screaming Into The Void - Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2025

Screaming Into The Void plunges us into both a literal and metaphorical abyss of the digital echo chamber in which so many young women find themselves trapped. It’s a space saturated with the relentless churn of influencer culture: a Greek chorus of chirpy commands and curated authenticity. “Follow me.” “Fit check.” “Come … with me!” These are not simply catchphrases, but the constant background noise of a world where women’s lives are packaged, performed, and monetised.

Within this void emerge four archetypes of online femininity, instantly recognisable yet layered with unexpected nuance. There’s the hyper-disciplined Athletic Clean Girl (Eva Ellis), the Southern Trad Wife (Arlene McKay), the ethereal Divine Feminist (Abi Price), and the Relatable Queen (Marine Horne). At first glance, they might seem like caricatures plucked straight from an endless scroll but the performances bring them to life with sharp wit, fresh perspectives, and a sly acknowledgement of the absurdities behind the façade.

Kira Mason’s script captures the void as a loop without an exit, written with an unflinching awareness of how digital culture entraps its participants. Her writing traps the influencers in a cycle of creation and self-preservation: first the pressure to produce, then the pressure to maintain, and finally the crushing weight of sustaining an identity that may never have been entirely real. Moore’s keen observation ensures this isn’t just satire but a study in psychological attrition, showing how the constant performance erodes mental health and blurs the boundary between the personal and the performative until escape feels impossible.

The cast are uniformly excellent and turn this into a fantastic showcase of their talents with each finding humanity within these traditional online roles many female influencers are pushed into . Ellis takes the Clean Girl from grating perfectionism to surprising vulnerability, forcing the audience to reassess their judgement. McKay’s southern drawl is so authentic it’s a shock to learn she’s Scottish. Price’s comic instincts make her spiritual influencer both ridiculous and convincing, while Horne’s Relatable Queen simmers with anger and railing against the harm these curated ideals inflict.

Together, their journey expose how “women support women, no matter what” can become a shield against valid criticism and a refusal to hold each other accountable even when the cost is women’s mental health. Mason’s script champions that true solidarity isn’t blind endorsement, but the courage to be honest, to challenge harmful behaviours, and to seek genuine connection.
