Chastity Quirke (Leigh Douglas) is a proud Republican, former Chapter President of Kappa Gamma Zeta, and most importantly White House receptionist and close personal friend to the President of the United States. She’s blonde, poised, terrifyingly ambitious, and determined to serve her country in the only way she knows how: by proving her loyalty at any cost. The icky Democrats? Her ex-boyfriend? Socialism itself? They don’t stand a chance.
At first glance, Chastity is little more than a well-manicured accessory to the cowboy politicians around her but that’s the trick. She’s the perfect political assassin, able to operate in plain sight, underestimated by everyone except the audience. The play digs cleverly into how Chastity’s formation in the pressure-cooker of high school sorority life where status is survival and appearances are everything prepares her for the brutal theatre of Washington, D.C. Her mother, a hairdresser turned master manipulator of small-town secrets, taught her well: politics is just gossip in a bigger room. Chastity wields her pretty privilege like a weapon, seducing without being touched, playing the men around her like chess pieces. But in a world where power dynamics are always shifting, even a skilled operator like her can't stay in control forever. What begins as a game of manipulation turns into a cautionary tale and one where the same systems that reward her for selling out her own ideals will eventually turn on her when she stops being useful. The genius of ROTUS lies in how it satirises both the hollowness of American political theatre and the twisted expectations placed on women who succeed within it. Through Chastity’s journey, the show explores the cost of being the “guys’ girl,” and the uncomfortable revelation that allegiance to patriarchy doesn't protect you from its violence. Leigh Douglas is magnetic in the role of Chastity, delivering a tightly wound, high-energy performance that rarely lets up. As a solo performer, she commands the stage with impressive physicality from manicured sorority poise to backroom political scheming and seduction, every movement feels deliberate and revealing. She deftly shapeshifts into a range of supporting characters from across the political spectrum, each rendered with sharp caricature and just enough nuance to feel disturbingly real. When Chastity is forced to choose between proving herself to the men in power or embracing the unexpected strength of female friendship, she comes face-to-face with her worst nightmare that she might actually be a feminist.
