Kat Ronson: Millennial Girl (WIP) - Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2026

Kat Ronson has become something of a minor internet icon through her viral throwback character Katie, the millennial girl whose social media sketches have amassed more than 70 million views. Millennial Girl takes that character and throws her headfirst into the drama, nostalgia and chaos of the 2000s, creating a gloriously funny multimedia trip through the decade that shaped a generation.

What makes the show work is that Ronson goes beyond the obvious technical markers of the era. Yes, there are MySpace, Bebo and Facebook, but these platforms become a way of charting how millennials learned to construct and perform their identities online. Celebrity culture, trends and the changing nature of bullying all become part of the story, showing how the early internet gradually transformed from something we visited into something we lived through. The presentations tracking that evolution are particularly effective, giving the show the feel of a living social media time capsule.

Ronson’s Katie is also a brilliantly observed character. There is something of Simon from The Inbetweeners in her, a spiritual companion who is simultaneously painfully self-aware and completely oblivious to how she comes across. Ronson understands the comedy of the millennial experience without simply mocking it, and the result feels affectionate as much as it does ridiculous.

The original songs are a real highlight are a fantastic evolution of the character Ronson has made famous online, proving that a viral persona can have a surprisingly rich life beyond the screen. And, in a show packed with nostalgia, there is even the small matter of what may be the best punchline involving a Fay Bentos pie since The Office.
