I’m Autistic is an accessible and sincere musical, and deeply compassionate love letter to autistic individuals navigating a world that was never designed with them in mind.
Neurodivergent actors Chloe (Olivia Jenkins), Lauren (Liberty Ashford), and Nat (Gabriel Phelan) embody young adults facing a spectrum of everyday challenges such as bullying, communication barriers, the uncertainty of disclosure, and the exhausting purgatory of waiting lists. These stories reflect lived experiences with nuance and honesty. As someone with over 15 years of professional experience supporting the neuroinclusion of neurodivergent individuals across health, education, and employment in Scotland, I was struck by how deftly Leonora Brooks’ songs and script weave together myth-busting, masking, social critique, and heartfelt storytelling. The production tackles masking, societal misconceptions, and systemic barriers without ever losing sight of its warmth or accessibility. It invites the audience in, whether they have direct experience of autism or not. Importantly, the themes resonate far beyond autism alone. With 1 in 7 people being neurodivergent, many of the barriers explored through an autistic lens are equally relevant across the neurodivergent spectrum. The show demonstrates, with clarity and empathy, that even the smallest, simplest changes by society and our audience in understanding and behaviour can make the world more inclusive. Lee Hutchison.
