Sarah Maria Lafferty poses a question that countless Fringe performers quietly ask themselves: How to Become a Movie Star?
It’s a question she’s been pondering since she was seven, and in this warm, engaging hour she takes us on her quest for an answer. Inspired by fellow Irish actor Gabriel Byrne’s unlikely leap from schoolteacher to Hollywood star, Lafferty follows in his footsteps in a journey that winds from Ireland to New York, back to Ireland, then on to London, and back again. Along the way she works behind bars to pay the bills, lives in a hostel while honing her craft at a London drama school, and keeps chasing the elusive spark that might make her stand out. Clad simply in a black T-shirt, leggings, and pumps as if she’s still in class allowing Lafferty to draw the audience into her world with ease. It feels like an intimate sermon for anyone chasing their own version of the dream: how to be noticed, how to shine, and perhaps how to survive in between. Part of the show’s magic lies in its blurring of truth and performance. Lafferty’s warmth, vulnerability, and sharply observed storytelling make you wonder just how much of this “character” is really her and that question lingers in the best, most compelling way. What makes the show so refreshing is its sincerity. Free of cynicism, powered by Lafferty’s Irish charm, How to Become a Movie Star? is both a love letter to the craft and a gentle reminder that the journey itself can be just as compelling as the destination. 4/5 Lee Hutchison How To Become A Movie Star?
