After earning critical acclaim from both ourselves and the wider critical circle at last year’s Fringe with a contemporary dance adaptation of Midsommar, choreographer and director Paige Luisa Sinclair expands her ambitious vision far beyond a remote Swedish village. In her latest production, Sinclair alongside the Paige Luisa Dance Company (Elena De Melim, Micol Giovannini, Megan Hayes and Ruby Wardlow) take us on an  journey through the four natural elements of Air, Water, Fire, and Earth.

Much like Holst did with The Planets, translating the character of each celestial body into music, Sinclair breathes life into each element through movement. Each is brought to the stage with its own distinct energy and mood and infused with influences from contemporary, hip-hop, and folk traditions, the choreography is rooted in the rhythms of nature and shaped by the symbolic traits of the zodiac. The result is a rich, layered performance with each section telling a story of its power.

Across nearly 45 minutes of unbroken movement, the dancers delivered a performance that was technically breathtaking. Their synchronicity was mesmerising and a precision that never once felt mechanical. Each transition between elements was seamless, each gesture charged with intention.

It’s an extraordinary display of physical artistry and stamina from a company of outrageously talented performers. From the opening moments, the performance drew audible gasps, awe, and ended in rapturous, well-earned applause.

Among the large and enthusiastic crowd were many young people with eyes wide, leaning forward, completely captivated. It's not hard to imagine that this performance might spark something in them. The Paige Luisa Dance Company aren't just commanding the stage but they may well be inspiring the next generation of dancers with every leap, spin, and breath.
