Couture - Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2026

​The tortured artist is hardly new territory, but Couture finds a fresh angle by examining creativity through the intertwined worlds of theatre and fashion. Directed by Ché Powers, the play follows aspiring playwright and seamstress Taylor, played by Charlotte Bradstreet, whose opportunity to write for a major Australian theatre company quickly becomes an all-consuming obsession. As her insecurities over authenticity, success and artistic identity begin to unravel, Couture asks uncomfortable questions about where inspiration ends and exploitation begins, particularly when the stories closest to us belong to the people we love.

Before a word is spoken, the production tells its own story. Dominating the stage is a bath overflowing with fast fashion, carefully designed garments, notebooks and stacks of famous texts. It's a striking image that immediately poses the question the play spends the next hour unpacking: is Taylor genuinely creative, or is she simply performing what creativity is supposed to look like? Like the chaotic but meticulously curated aesthetic surrounding her, her writing begins to feel assembled from borrowed pieces, raising doubts over whether she has an original voice or is simply repackaging the experiences of others.

That tension is embodied in Taylor's relationship with her partner Ayla played by Elodie Connellan. Their conversations are filled with therapy-speak and declarations that rarely connect, with both characters often talking at one another rather than to one another. While Taylor attempts to transform Ayla's painful coming-out experience into something mythic and theatrical, Ayla rejects the idea outright, refusing to let her girlfriend "steal my trauma" and an intense conflict about artistic ethics begins.

Adding another compelling layer is Martha Meager's unnerving performance as "The Actor," a figure who prowls the edges of the stage like a predator, voicing the fears, delusions and uncomfortable truths the central couple refuse to confront. She becomes the physical manifestation of self-doubt, piercing the carefully constructed identities Taylor and Ayla present both to each other and themselves.

Dense, ambitious and unapologetically theatrical, Couture doesn't always offer easy answers, nor does it try to. It presents a thoughtful exploration of authenticity, artistic obsession and queer identity that breathes new life into the familiar story of the suffering writer.
