Beginning at 10:40 pm, audiences may be ending their day with Anaïs Gralpois, but in her debut Fringe show American Fetish, recounting her self-confessed slag era, it’s clear we’re not the only ones who’ve spent a night with her.
Anaïs charts her journey from Seattle to London, reflecting on her virgin ways in the States before discovering a peculiar cultural twist: in the UK, the American accent itself becomes a magnet. An American fetish, she explains, is very real and the way she explores and uses it, it’s impossible not to be charmed. She populates the stage with a vividly drawn rogues’ gallery of partners and misadventures, each brought to life with perfectly timed audience interaction that makes you feel complicit in every awkward, hilarious, and occasionally jaw-dropping moment. The show doesn’t just tell stories; it recreates the collective highs and lows of modern dating that messy mix of sex, ghosting and trauma that so many of us know too well in the crowd. Anaïs invites the audience into her world with a confessional intimacy that feels like swapping outrageous dating stories over late-night drinks. Her tales from drama school in London are a particular highlight. Those whispered rumours about the rampant promiscuity of theatre school? Anaïs gleefully confirms them and then some in hysterical detail. What makes American Fetish truly irresistible, though, is Anaïs’ natural warmth. She delivers comedy about love, loss, cringe, and outright embarrassment with an openness that feels disarmingly real. Millennials and Gen Z alike will find themselves nodding in recognition one moment and doubled over in laughter the next. It’s a late-night encounter you won’t regret!
