A Microscopic Odyssey - Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2026

A Microscopic Odyssey is simply one of the most beautiful shows at the Fringe. Ben Boulton-Jones plays microbiologist James Weiss, a young man struggling with the lasting impact of childhood trauma and a profound sense of disconnection from the world around him. Searching for meaning and somewhere to belong, Weiss turns to the microscope and discovers an extraordinary universe hidden inside something as mundane as a muddy puddle. What begins as scientific curiosity becomes a journey towards wonder, resilience and reconnection.

What makes the show so remarkable is the way it turns the act of looking into theatre. Using live overhead projection, movement and a cinematic soundscape, it creates an entire microscopic world in front of us. An overhead projector which is an object that might ordinarily elicit groans from a school classroom becomes an instrument of extraordinary beauty. Through clever manipulation and an astonishing array of techniques, universes and microorganisms appear to bloom and multiply before our eyes. The microscopic becomes enormous, and suddenly the smallest things in our world feel vast and significant.

Greta Abbey, Allie-Rae Fossum and Elijah Bai Bangura make up an exceptional ensemble, taking on much of the intricate technical work behind the projections while also using their bodies to bring microorganisms, trees and the natural world to life. There is something wonderfully fluid about the way the performers move between human, microscopic and natural forms, reinforcing the show's sense that everything is connected. It was also lovely to see Abbey back at the Fringe after she was one of our Fringe stars in It's A Sheet Show in 2024.

There is not a moment in this production that isn't beautiful or emotionally affecting. The lighting, sound and music are stunning, working together with the projections to create something that feels almost cinematic. Even the smallest details have been given extraordinary care. A torch bouncing off a disco ball becomes a moment of pure visual beauty. Every transition, every movement and every image feels meticulously considered, directed to within an inch of its life, yet the precision never overwhelms the emotion.

I spent much of the show writing variations of "wow" and "beautiful" in my notebook, which perhaps tells you everything you need to know. But A Microscopic Odyssey isn't simply beautiful for beauty's sake. Its celebration of wonder feels like a gentle challenge to the cynicism that adulthood can bring. We stop looking closely. We become accustomed to the world. We lose that childhood ability to be completely astonished by something small.

This show gives some of that wonder back. For adults who have become cynical or disconnected, it is a beautiful reminder that the world is still full of things capable of astonishing us. For younger audiences, it could be something even more powerful: an invitation to see nature not as something distant or abstract, but as a living, extraordinary world that is worth caring for and protecting.
