During the 124 days before the release of The Last Jedi, I’m reviewing all 124 minutes of the theatrical version of
The Empire Strikes Back. Join me and together we will watch Star Wars….
In the grand tradition of reveals, the good guys open a door and come face to face with the chief big bad himself, Darth Vader. The art department specifically designed the chairs to be smaller than Vader's high-backed throne at the head of the table, not only to emphasize his ominous presence but also to stand out over actor David Prowse's tall frame.
Minute 88:00 gets high marks because it jump-starts the speedy march to the finale. From the door opening to Vader standing in the middle of the dining room to his hand deflecting Han's blaster bolts to the Agatha Christie "It-Was-You-The-Whole-Time!"-entrance of Boba Fett to the formation of stormtroopers closing around them: this scene is such a quick succession of big little moments it's crazy to think it covers a full 60 seconds. Also, it wasn't until freeze-framing my way through Empire that I noticed Han's laser bolt is deflected back onto the wall next to Lando. How did he do that?
But more importantly, how does Vader eat? According to this message board post, he doesn't.
Lando looks a bit remorseful as he turns his friend over to the ultimate enemy, but our heroes put on their sabacc-faces and head into the Cloud City breakfast nook.
This minute and the scene ends there, but it wasn't always intended to end this way. In Leigh Brackett's first draft, Han and Lando got physical and Vader got... friendly? Read the exchange for yourself and tell me he's not absolutely chummy with these galactic traitors...
Yeah, that's interesting and all, but here's how it really went down:
And I hope Lando prepared a nice dinner for everybody because...
Best Performance by a Human: Vader as the consummate host.
Best Performance by a Non-human: The laser-to-Vader-hand pyrotechnics.
Best Line: Vader's invitation - "we would be honored if you would join us."
Rating: 5 out 5 courses from this Force Awakens-themed Alamo Drafthouse dinner menu.
