During the 124 days before the release of The Last Jedi, I’m reviewing all 124 minutes of the theatrical version of
The Empire Strikes Back. Join me and together we will watch Star Wars….
Minute 83:00 of Empire Strikes Back is where this dramatic space opera turns into Intervention: Dagobah. Yoda and Obi Wan Ken-Ghostly take turns urging Luke to continue his training using quotes from inspirational posters. But we’re left wondering why Obi chooses to appear as the old version of himself when he could easily join the party as a transparent version of his younger self.
Herein lies a new problem brought about by the prequels and special editions. At the end of Return of the Jedi, Luke is visited by three spirits... Kenobi, Yoda, and Vader (or the ghosts of Life Day past, present, and future). In the 2005 re-release, as we all know, Lucas replaced old age Anakin-actor Sebastian Shaw with Hayden Christensen. If Anakin can one-up everyone by appearing in his younger, Canadian form, what’s keeping Yoda from appearing as his creepy-faced puppet look from The Phantom Menace? And what’s stopping Kenobi from showing up as the star of Eye of the Beholder, Ewan McGregor? The answer is probably: Luke has no idea what these old dogs looked like when they were his age. Obi Wan and Yoda have the decency to at least show up to the Endor after-party looking like their familiar selves. Meanwhile, Anakin materializes and acts like the guy who just won the Biggest Loser competition at work and expects everyone to notice. We know he was redeemed from the Dark Side but he’s still a cocky jerk.
Outside of #whiteghostproblems, where did that X-Wing ladder come from? And where does it go? Was continuity too busy to catch that?!
Best Performance by a Human: Glow-in-the-dark Obi Wan Kenobi.
Best Performance by a Non-human: Scratch-and-sniff Yoda.
Best Line: Obi Wan's warning to Luke - "it is you and your abilities the emperor wants. That is why your friends are made to suffer."
Rating: 12 out of 13 Ghosts.
