During the 124 days before the release of The Last Jedi, I’m reviewing all 124 minutes of the theatrical version of The Empire Strikes Back. Join me and together we will watch Star Wars. . . .
In Minute 8:00, Han isn’t a great friend to wookiees nor droids. When he’s done with Leia, he heads over to the Falcon to yell at Chewbacca over everything he’s doing wrong in repairing the ship. What they did to get it in this terrible shape we’ll never know. It probably just didn’t pass Rebel inspections.
When Threepio and Artoo arrive to Han that Luke hasn’t arrived yet, they’re acting as intermediaries on behalf of Leia. It’s a smart move considering they’ve already bickered through all the base’s close quarters and they shouldn’t make a scene in front of the hangar crew. This concern hits Han and he asks around for Luke’s whereabouts until he reaches the Tauntaun stables… and that is it. It’s the first minute that ends abruptly, as it doesn’t close out on an emotional beat or the end of a scene.
With Return of the Jedi, much complaining gets thrown around the dark web about how Han Solo is such a different character in Episode VI. While he still has his sardonic sense of humor, he’s a sellout who gives it all up for the girl. Solo is a self-assured guy who can take care of himself but Leia’s obviously not just some other space-broad to him. These opening moments between the couple show that Han’s already turning soft before Return of the Jedi. He keeps trying to get Leia to ask him to stay, he makes sure she follows him down the hallway, and she gets him to make a scene so why shouldn’t we expect him to stick around for a new life with Leia in the next movie?
As for this minute, all attention on the central romantic relationship gets shelved while two other leads show their concern for Luke’s well-being.
Best Performance by a Human: Worried Han Solo (Harrison Ford)
Best Performance by a Non-Human: Frustrated Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew)
Best Line: C-3P0 - “But it’s supposed to be freezing. How we’re going to dry off all her clothes I really don’t know.” (Why are they drying off Princess Leia’s wardrobe? Is the base melting?)
Rating: -54 degrees Celsius out of -60 degrees Celsius, the average surface temperature on Hoth.
Stay tuned tomorrow for Minute 9:00 where Han tells the Tauntaun trainer where he’ll next see him!
