During the 124 days before the release of The Last Jedi, I’m reviewing all 124 minutes of the theatrical version of
The Empire Strikes Back. Join me and together we will watch Star Wars….
In a film full of darker themes, the characters are literally stepping into the darkest location around. While Luke faces his own demons in a cave on Dagobah several minutes from now, Han, Leia, Chewie and Threepio find themselves inside of one. It's like the story of "Jonah and the Whale" except here, Jonah brought his girlfriend, his dog and his butler. And when allegorical-Jonah and company step outside, we're left with some important questions that the characters should be asking. Shouldn't it be puzzling that the temperature outside the ship isn't bitter cold? There's a humidity to the air and there's more dry ice on the ground than a 1980 Fleetwood Mac concert.
Keeping all this in mind, it takes way too long for residential hotshot, Han Solo, to realize that they've landed inside an interstellar anomaly. No one thought it was weird they could meander around an asteroid without a space suit. It's not until Han shoots a mynock chewing on their power cables that Leia even thinks to say, "I have a bad feeling about this." And she related to the most powerful Force-sensitive family in the galaxy.
So the air isn't breathable, but their skin is fine. I'd imagine, if you're (SPOILER ALERT) inside the belly of space-resistant slug, you'd instantly be burned by acid. But, hey, I don't really know the anatomy of a space slug, and I guess neither did Lucas or Kasdan. So, at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter. If you check out the behind-the-scenes photo below, you'll see that even a super-fan could build their own space slug set. All you need is a fog machine, a floor of trash bags and a darkened sound stage.
Best Performance by a Human: Han Solo, appearing self-assured even when wearing a gas-mask.
Best Performance by a Non-human: The mynock chewing on the power cables.
Best Line: Leia's "I have a bad feeling about this."
Rating: 8.8 out of the 10 times characters have said "I have a bad feeling about this" in the Star Wars films so far.
