During the 124 days before the release of The Last Jedi, I’m reviewing all 124 minutes of the theatrical version of
The Empire Strikes Back. Join me and together we will watch Star Wars….
In Minute 47:00, we settle into our surroundings. Luke unpacks his X-Wing and closes the hatch before any more moisture gets in. We follow him as he moves through the elastic vines to his base camp. Luke's framed by branches and we're watching him from the shadows. The overgrowth around him and Artoo gives an overwhelming feeling, like this strange and mysterious planet could swallow them whole. Also, our vantage point creates the sense that we're spying on them, feeding Luke's suspicions that he's being watched.
Luke plugs Artoo in, it's the OT's only onscreen moment where one character is indisposed. Really, where are the bathrooms? While these characters attempt to recharge, we're given a breather as well. The action resets and with Luke's crash-landing into this new environment we need to get our bearings before we're acquainted with Yoda and reacquainted with the Force.
Best Performance by a Human: Luke cautiously setting up camp.
Best Performance by a Non-human: R2-D2 getting "tucked in."
Best Line: Luke's "it's a really strange place to find a Jedi Master."
Rating: 54 out of 60 minutes' worth of charge for Sphero's app controlled R2-D2, only $59.95 at your local Wal-Mart (while supplies last!)
