During the 124 days before the release of The Last Jedi, I’m reviewing all 124 minutes of the theatrical version of
The Empire Strikes Back. Join me and together we will watch Star Wars….
In Minute 43:00, R2-D2 learns not to swim in the swamp, we learn that astromech droids are waterproof, and Steven Spielberg learns not to get too self-referential.
Before Artoo falls in, Luke tells his little companion to stay put, but R2-D2 is too curious. As he emerges from his port, he seems to have a wobbly go at it - for a droid with a low center of gravity that's supposed to be inserted into the top of an X-Wing like it's his job, he should be able find his footing, no problem. Instead he topples over like a stomping-grape lady #tbt.
Luke thinks he's lost his little buddy, and R2-D2 surprises us from the shallow bottom of this swamp with a periscope eye #tbt.
Neither of them notice the fin of that swamp-shark as it closes in on our submerged friend. Is this a 5-years-too-late Jaws reference?
Probably not - within the same seven months as the release of Empire, Airplane! did it better and 1941 did it worse.
Luckily, after 1941 (33% on Rotten Tomatoes) Spielberg learned to never reference himself ever again. Oh, wait...
Best Performance by a Human: Luke Skywalker worried about losing Gilligan, I mean, R2-D2.
Best Performance by a Non-human: Artoo's periscope.
Best Line: Luke scolding Artoo - "You be more careful."
Rating: 17 out of 20 pop culture references that i09 found in the Ready Player One trailer.
