During the 124 days before the release of The Last Jedi, I’m reviewing all 124 minutes of the theatrical version of The Empire Strikes Back. Join me and together we will watch Star Wars….
Like a medieval fortress, the heavy shield doors of the Rebel base must be closed for the night. Her officers ask her for the go-ahead, she nods and lets them proceed. It’s one of the few instances where Leia’s weakness (her feelings for her friends) is presented outwardly. She can talk her way into and out of any situation but she has a hard time expressing herself true feelings. She should try art therapy.
Chewie, however, can yell all he wants.
C-3P0 thinks he’s helping when he tells Leia the chances of surviving a night in the elements (725 to 1). But that’s better than the chances of surviving an asteroid field are 3,720 to 1. And better than the chances of surviving a night on the Hoth set…
At Elstree Studios in England, as they spent several months filming the interior scenes (about 95% of the movie, 64 sets and 250 scenes), the cast would drink their way around London. Carrie Fisher was staying in Eric Idle’s apartment during filming. While the Monty Python member was shooting Life of Brian, he learned of a beverage called the Tunisian Death Drink – according to Fisher “they gave it to the extras to make them more compliant.” It’s fitting the shooting location for Tatooine served as inspiration for the good times behind the scenes on the sequel. While Leia couldn’t find Han Hoth, Fisher was able to get Ford over for some late night hangouts with Monty Python and the Rolling Stones.
Too bad nobody invited Luke....
Although he’s not alone. A ghostly voice beckon’s out to him, and while it sounds like Obi Wan, we don’t see his apparition just yet. We’ll have to wait for the next minute to see our first glimpse of Empire’s mysticism.
Best Performance by a Human: Leia nodding.
Best Performance by a Non-human: Chewie growling in anguish.
Best Line: C-3P0’s “Artoo has been known to make mistakes, from time to time…”
Rating: Odds of 705:1 out of 725:1.
Stay tuned tomorrow for Minute 14:00 in which a ghost tells Luke to go to a swamp for a couple days.
